School Psychology

School psychological services consist of consultation, counseling, behavioral and academic intervention, crisis intervention, and psychological and academic evaluation. All services are provided to improve the educational success of all students. The school psychologist uses methods that ensure fair and non-biased evaluation. The services are provided by a New York State certified school psychologist. The services are available in all schools. If you have questions regarding an evaluation or intervention for your child, you can contact the school psychologist by calling the school’s mainline and asking to speak with the psychologist.
Role of the School Psychologist is to:
- Consult and work with students, teachers, administrators and parents to improve positive academic and behavioral outcomes for students.
- Serve as a member of the building multidisciplinary team to assess students functioning and provides intervention and instructional recommendations.
- Serve as a member of the school’s Response to Intervention Team, for both academic and behavioral issues.
- Use assessment information to guide intervention strategies
- Provide individual psychological and academic assessments of students to help in planning and designing appropriate educational programs.
- Provide individual and group counseling as appropriate.
- Serve as a member of a multidisciplinary team that conducts Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA).
- Serve as a chairperson for or member of Section 504 committee meetings.
- Serve as a mandated member of the Committee on Special Education.
- Work as a partner to collect data and make informed instructional decisions. They assist in the analysis of student data such as IRLA and I-Ready, behavior charting, and Curriculum Based Measurement (CBM)
- Share in the case management role of the evaluation team of their building.
