Drowning is preventable, and water safety starts at home. Pursuant to NYS law, we are sharing essential drowning prevention and safe swimming resources with our district families.
The New York State Department of Health recommends the following:
Always supervise children closely around water and never rely solely on lifeguards or flotation devices.
Swim with a buddy, know your swimming ability and avoid alcohol or drugs while swimming or boating.
Swim only in safe, designated areas, pay attention to weather conditions and never dive into water of unknown depth.
Wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket when boating or participating in water activities.
Learn to recognize the signs of drowning, which can happen quickly and quietly, and consider learning CPR and basic water rescue skills.
Help prevent the spread of germs by avoiding swimming when sick, staying out of contaminated water and practicing good hygiene.
