Every spring, students across New York State in grades 3-8 take part in a common assessment in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math, as well as Science in grades 4 and 8.
These annual tests are federally required under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and the results provide information about both your child and your child’s school as compared to others across the state. Testing under ESSA looks to ensure that students, no matter where they attend school in NYS, receive quality educational programming.
NYS has responded to the concerns voiced by parents and educators and has significantly reduced the length of these assessments. NYS no longer imposes time constraints on students who wish to take longer to complete the assessments.
In support of our 1 to 1 computer initiative, students in grades 3-8 will take the ELA assessment on their Chromebook during the week of April 1, 2019. The students in grades 6-8 will take the Math assessment on their Chromebooks. Grades 3-5 will take the paper-based Math assessment. Both formats will be administered during the week of April 30, 2019. We feel this will offer our students valuable on-line testing experience that they will need in future studies. The Science Performance Test for grades 4 and 8 will be the week of May 22, 2019, with the written exam occurring on June 3, 2019.
As parents, you will be provided with detailed reports on how your child scored on these assessments as compared to similar students in the State. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s principal for more information.
